We’re pleased to announce that CAIM1 and Tropic Square are entering a partnership. Tropic Square is a Prague-based fabless semiconductor firm building the world's first auditable secure element (SE). CAIM1 is a pioneering firm pushing the boundaries of digital authenticity with a camera designed to attest the origin of a photo or video at the moment of capture.

On the fit between our two products, Tropic Square Interim CEO Ladislav Veselý said:

“CAIM1 is who TROPIC01’s auditable silicon exists for — builders gaining a way to verify trust instead of taking it on faith. When our customer’s mission rests on provable authenticity, the hardware we supply underneath has to hold up to that same scrutiny. That's the kind of partnership Tropic Square was designed to support.”

The Death of the Photograph

The team at CAIM1, Counter Artificial Intelligence Machine, believes the photograph, as we once understood it, is dead. The aggressive rise of generative AI, deepfakes, and invisible computational photography has completely eroded our baseline assumption of truth when looking at photos.

That is exactly why CAIM1 was built. To resurrect the photograph as a reliable historical record, the CAIM1 team built an entirely new camera. They realized they should not piggyback off another manufacturer's smartphone or closed system. Instead, CAIM1 was engineered from the ground up as a dedicated device with one singular purpose: to capture and relentlessly protect objective reality.

Replacing Obscurity with Transparency

To achieve this vision, CAIM1 required a foundation of absolute trust at the physical hardware level. That is where Tropic Square's TROPIC01 SE comes in. Acting as a digital vault, TROPIC01 ensures that every photon hitting the camera's sensor is authenticated, cryptographically locked, and inherently tamper-proof.

What makes TROPIC01 perfectly suited for CAIM1's mission is its foundation on the open-source RISC-V architecture. Historically, hardware security relied heavily on "security by obscurity," meaning engineers had to blindly trust that proprietary manufacturers didn't hide backdoors in their closed-source chips. At Tropic Square, we flip this on its head by embracing Kerckhoffs's Principle, a core tenet of cryptography stating that a system must remain secure even if everything about its design, except its key, is public knowledge. Because our RISC-V instruction set and the chip's internal logic are transparent, security researchers can validate the design down to the literal silicon level. With TROPIC01, developers aren't guessing the hardware is secure; they can transparently show it.

At its core, TROPIC01 functions as a fully auditable SE, providing the crucial missing piece in today's hardware-based authenticity solutions. By completely eliminating the need for blind trust, our chip enables an end-to-end verifiable ecosystem where media provenance of CAIM1 cameras is secured at the silicon level.

‍

For the CAIM1 team, this structural transparency was the deciding engineering factor when evaluating existing consumer hardware on the market. As Josh Cowell, Founder at CAIM1, explains:

"Take, for instance, Apple's recent push toward hardware attestation for iPhone images. While embedding cryptographic signatures at the point of capture sounds promising for combating AI-generated media, it asks users to rely on Apple's secure enclave. Neither independent security researchers nor the general public can audit its internal architecture, forcing users to place blind faith in a single corporate entity's closed ecosystem.”

Silicon Fingerprints and Chaotic Randomness

Beneath our open architecture lies a fascinating layer of physical cryptography. At the microscopic level, manufacturing tolerances dictate that no two silicon chips are ever perfectly identical. TROPIC01 leverages this microscopic variance to create a unique "silicon fingerprint," making every CAIM1 device mathematically unique, which is paramount for proving the definitive origin of every single image.

Furthermore, to generate encryption keys, our chip utilizes advanced physical noise systems. With Dual True Random Number Generators (TRNG) with non deterministic hardware entropy, TROPIC01 feeds pure, unpredictable entropy into its cryptographic algorithms. This ensures that the camera’s internal encryption isn't based on predictable digital software math, but rather on the raw, chaotic physics of the universe.

Aggressive Tamper Resistance

Of course, the strongest encryption in the world is useless if an attacker can simply pry the keys out of the physical device. This is where TROPIC01's aggressive anti-tamper mechanisms become critical for CAIM1's physical security model. If a bad actor attempts to brute-force their way into the system, our chip acts as a digital tripwire, locking itself down. Just as importantly, TROPIC01 encrypts internal data buses, ensuring that even if an attacker physically taps the wires inside the camera body, all they will intercept is meaningless static.

We are incredibly proud to partner with CAIM1 in their efforts to set a new standard for verifiable media. As the CAIM1 team summarizes:

"The traditional photograph is dead, and designing a secure camera to replace it is an exercise in healthy paranoia. By combining open, verifiable silicon with chaotic physical entropy and aggressive tamper resistance, TROPIC01 provides the ultimate peace of mind. It allows CAIM1 to build a fortress-like pipeline where objective reality remains locked down from the exact moment light hits the lens through to when proof data is cryptographically sealed and exported. Securing the photograph is where we start, but CAIM1 is ultimately just the foundation of a comprehensive, verifiable infrastructure we are developing designed to aid digital truth." — Josh Cowell, Founder, CAIM1
